Chocolate is made from cocoa beans. The beans are roasted, and then ground, resulting in cocoa solids, which when combined with cocoa butter creates chocolate. Sugar, vanilla and/or milk may also be added. The total amount of cocoa solids and cocoa butter determines the cacao percentage for the different types of chocolate.
